Earlier this year I bought a Snakes and Ladders Game carpet. Today I challenged my Year 8 class to use it for the topic of Equations. I gave each group of 3 or 4 three pieces of paper. Most groups chose to write a series equations with solutions between one and six, and so if the player correctly solves the equation they go forward the number of the solution. If they make an error that is how far they go back or perhaps they stay still.

One group made coloured categories of questions matching the colours of the rectangles on the carpet. Each category had 4 questions. Again the solution was the progress made.

This all happened in 30 minutes so was not time-consuming.
