Data Snakes and Ladders

Today I gave my Year 8 class the task of modifying Snakes and Ladders to reinforce data. They had the board as a carpet and access to coloured paper and pens and a variety of dice as below. They had half an hour to come up with the rules and whatever aids they needed.

One group designed problems on cards, to be used at each throw of the die. If the student gained the correct answer to the problem, they went forward the number of spaces of the throw. Otherwise they didn’t move.

Another group came up with the idea of having three players Mean, Median and Mode. At the top and bottom of each ladder they had a card with 5 numbers. The game is played the same way as Snakes and Ladders with the addition of having to calculate their player name at the ladders.
