More on the Dan Meyer workshop

10 08 2014

For those unfamiliar with Dan Meyer this Ted talk on Maths class needing a makeover sets the scene.

An interesting outcome of the ranking of music performers in our group came about because of the range of ages of the group and hence the lack of familiarity of music performers of a different era. It worked both ways and so was a good topic for everyone to experience the inability to rank all performers.

This highlights the impact on students, of activities not familiar to their experience or interests. As teachers we are aware of this phenomenon but cannot always ensure we include all students with our choice of topic.
